2- My Bug List

My Bug List

  1. My apartment complex has no recycling system so my roommates and I have to save our recycle in the unit and take it to a third party disposer.

Why does this bug exist? The City of Gainesville charges my complex separately for recycling.

2. The Chic-Fil-A's and Starbucks' on campus do not accept gift cards, leaving me with useless cards after holidays and birthdays.

Why does this bug exist? All restaurants and chain-places to eat on campus are leased to third party businesses and owners.

3. I cannot walk in the grass around my complex because there is too much dog poop.

Why does this bug exist? The dog park designated for my complex has very little room for dogs to use the bathroom because of the retention pond in the middle of the dog park.

4. It takes a couple minutes longer for me to get out of the parking garage on a scooter as opposed to a car.

Why? Because the exit gate for the parking garage is triggered by a weight sensor on which I have to sit in perfection position with the scooter.

5. Every time we fry food on the stovetop at my apartment the fire alarm goes off.

Why does this bug exist? There are no ceiling fans in the apartment.

6. The bus times for my leaving and returning stops are switched.

Why? The bus app misstates the locations of the bus stops, switching the times.

7.  The study room at my apartment complex is always full.

Why? The chairs and sofas in the study room are unnecessarily large and poorly organized.

8.  The laces and strings on the laundry in our apartment gets twisted pulled out of our clothes.

Why? The laundry machine is old and has crevices that catch edges and strings of clothing.

9. None of my friends have anywhere to park when they come to my apartment.

My apartment complex has no designated visitor parking and the neighboring UF parking lots have strict policies.

10. My petition to take classes in person in the fall takes weeks to get approved.

Why? IA requires me to send papers to the college and get approved and show proof.

11. I often come back to my scooter moved a couple feet or turned to fit another scooter.

Why? My scooter lock broke in the fall and scooter parking is so scarce on campus.

12. The entrance to the parking garage at my complex smells like trash all the time.

Why? The compactor at the bottom of the chute is located right next to the entrance to the parking garage.

13. I can hear my roommate practicing his ukelele no matter what I am doing or what time of day.

Why? The walls at my apartment complex are very thin.

14. I didn't have enough time to decide whether or not I wanted to drop a class.

Why? My teacher cancelled class one day during drop/add week and another day was taught by TA's. Drop/add week is only 5 days long.

15. I always step in the puddle that forms right outside of the elevator at my apartment.

Why? There is a leak in the roof right outside of the elevator that creates the puddle every time it rains.

16. I have to swipe my card multiple times at many vending machines on campus before it finally works.

Why? The swipe mechanism is worn down on the machine.

17. I got a ticket from UF parking while parked trying to get a decal.

Why? The UF parking and administration department has no scooter parking for anyone who needs to go to the office in person.

18. I couldn't find my class in Turlington Hall.

Why? The map on the wall on floor 2 does not tell you your current location, making it very hard to locate yourself on the map itself.

19. My window is very loud when I close it at night

Why? The window frame does not slide smoothly in the rolling mechanism, creating a loud screech.

20. I can't watch anything on the flatscreen TV's at the pool.

Why? The TV's are not hooked up to electrical ports behind the mount on the wall, leaving them useless for residents with an HDMI cable who cannot power the TV.

Reflection-

When I first started thinking about this assignment, I was trying really hard, too hard, to think of bugs I had on campus. As I tried to expand my scope, I tried thinking about my everyday routine and things I knew I had to frequently and that gradually brought me to realize I had a lot of bugs surrounding my life at home and out in the city as opposed to my student life on campus. I am thankful this is the case but it also brought me to realize that I am much more strict and picky about what bugs me at home because its my space and I feel like it should be almost entirely manipulated to my benefit. It made me think about wasting time and energy on stuff that really has no impact on my long-term happiness but bothers me enough to ruin my temporary mood. For example, stepping in a puddle walking to my scooter.
