15A Figuring Out Buyer Behavior Pt. 2

Before starting my search for interviewees that fit my segment, I decided it was important to ask leading questions that could give me detailed insight on the alternatives for the need I am addressing. The three individuals I interviewed gave me information I need to consider when realizing my business idea. My interviews did not provide me with any alternatives I had not thought of, but nonetheless they were still a success because I needed to know more about the obvious alternatives When a student that walks to class sees its raining outside the library, the alternatives are essentially an umbrella, rain jacket, or some sort of covered transportation that can use sidewalks and pedestrian spaces on campus. Right now almost everyone at UF has invested in a rain jacket or umbrella, and my interviews gave me information on the factors that go into these decisions. My first interviewee uses a rain jacket. I asked her about price, brand, color, thickness, and effectiveness and learned a...

14A Halfway Reflection

1) With an exception or two, every single behavior that I have developed in this class that has genuinely helped me is related to planning in one way or another. With all due respect to this class, this class is well described as tedious, its nothing too hard but you need to be consistent, committed, and respectful to the amount of reflection and curious thinking the course requires. To keep up with the assignments, get ahead and set reminders and alarms. Use a calendar or a planner, just because this isn't high school doesnt mean its not cool to use a planner. Even if a planner isnt cool, an A in the class is. 2) I'll be honest. I felt like giving up before doing this very assignment. I had two papers and an exam due this week and next week I have three papers and two exams. What kept me going to do these assignments? knowing that in one week I'll have spring break to do as I please and sleep as much as I want. I remind myself I am paying for this class (well my gr...

13A Reading Reflection 1

Autobiography- "Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight  1) Surprise- Phil Knight started Nike with his former track coach at Oregon Admire- Took a chance after the army on his crazy idea Least Admire- Used ignorance as an excuse in the federal investigation. Adversity/failure- Phil Knight had no meaning in life before making the jump, became self -critical and had to deal with federal investigation. 2) Competencies- Phil Knight's story is one where he has exhibited resilience, faced pain, defended his company, defended his ideas, and creative in finding inspiration.  3) I was confused on what the company changed or did differently that allowed it to go public.  4) Two Questions for Phil Knight-  What was your original goal/expectations of you trip to Japan? Do you think you still would have gotten into shoes at some point if not for Bowerman? 5)It sounds corny, but I gather that Phil Knight is of the belief that hard work is nothing without a vision,...

12A- Buyer Behavior

1) The segment of my venture's market that I want to understand is the general college student population. 2) For my three interviews, I decided to choose college students that are on different schedules and engage in different types of activities. 3) Among all three interviews the biggest thing I noticed was the desire to have a dependable system for avoiding rain. When I asked each student about bringing an umbrella, I was met with a variety of excuses and explanations. Rain jackets are good and dependable, but to create a pick-up/return system for such seems a little complicated with packaging, sizing, and maintenance and playing a factor. Each student said an umbrella is somewhat easy to carry with a backpack on and easy to use/remove. In two interviews, students said that they consider missing class when its raining and often check the weather before leaving their house/apartment/dorm. In Florida however, rain comes at very spontaneous times, leaving students unable to ade...

11A- Idea Napkin

1) Who am I? -I am Joaquin Noguerol, an undergraduate student at the University of Florida majoring in Political Science. I am bilingual with Uruguayan heritage, I am a good public speaker and I work well with others in work and education environments. I aspire to make our lives more efficient in order to free more time that can be dedicated to issues that are actually difficult to solve as a collective society. I see my business idea of an Umbrella rental service potentially going nationwide. Campus is great place to start in terms of getting people to realize the reliability and convenience of renting an umbrella you can drop off at your destination. 2) What do I have to offer to customers? - My umbrella rental service will feature a variety of pick-up/drop-off locations strategically place over a given area with large amounts of pedestrian traffic. For example, on campus some potential locations for a pick-up/drop-off bucket would be at the exits to a lecture hall, entrances/exi...

9A- Testing the Hypothesis, part 2

From the interviews I conducted, I realized there were multiple changes I wanted to make after learning a lot about what lies outside the boundaries of my need. Who: I think the who of the need is largely dependent on where it is raining and what types of daily routines walk outside for short periods of time throughout the day. My second interviewee said the need is also held by anyone that has to walk or cannot/does not carry an umbrella or rain jacket. IT can also be hard for individuals in wheelchairs to have an umbrella accessible at all times. What: From my first interview and third interview with individuals who work full time off campus, learned that my vision is not just applicable on campus. My first interviewee suggested the idea could work at the outlet at which she works where there are multiple buildings in close proximity where crowds have to walk outside for short periods of rain. Some sort of service to keep dry would surely keep shops busier in the rain. Why: My ...

8A- Solving the Problem

Opportunity- Most people on campus, for whatever reason it may be, find themselves walking between buildings and to or from different points of transportation. This being said, spontaneous rains in Florida can be inconvenient for anyone in these positions and it seems most solutions right now are inconvenient or tedious. Rain Jackets and umbrellas are often soaking wet and hard, leaving them hard to bring indoors or pack away in a bag or backpack. Most people walk from building to building on campus, leaving an opportunity for some sort of a pick-up/drop-off system for a product or service that could keep students from getting soaked in a 20 yard walk.  The Product/Service- My idea of an umbrella rental system would fit to solve almost all parts of the situation presented above. I believe there could be some sort of kiosk or exchange container where kids can use umbrellas that other kids brought to class. I believe with enough participation and locations efficiently plac...

7A Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

People get drenched in rain walking from place to place on campus. Opportunity- Product or service that keeps people dry as they move around campus. I have decided to pursue my idea of a Rent-a-bella product.  The Who: Students walking around on campus that walk from class to class in the rain. The What: Finding a way to prevent getting soaked walking to class. The Why: There is no efficient product/service that is convenient for walking and easy to pack/dry/dispose of after use. bringing your own umbrella every day is inefficient, tedious. Testing the Three Elements of my Hypothesis- Testing the Who: Other people who might benefit from a Rent-a-Brella service include faculty and administrative employees at the University of Florida, as well as service and maintenance employees without access to a golf cart or service truck. Students that live on campus could have access to Rent-a-Brella locations at every student dormitory on campus.  Testing the What: Ren...
