15A Figuring Out Buyer Behavior Pt. 2

Before starting my search for interviewees that fit my segment, I decided it was important to ask leading questions that could give me detailed insight on the alternatives for the need I am addressing.
The three individuals I interviewed gave me information I need to consider when realizing my business idea. My interviews did not provide me with any alternatives I had not thought of, but nonetheless they were still a success because I needed to know more about the obvious alternatives

When a student that walks to class sees its raining outside the library, the alternatives are essentially an umbrella, rain jacket, or some sort of covered transportation that can use sidewalks and pedestrian spaces on campus. Right now almost everyone at UF has invested in a rain jacket or umbrella, and my interviews gave me information on the factors that go into these decisions. My first interviewee uses a rain jacket. I asked her about price, brand, color, thickness, and effectiveness and learned a lot. She said she and her friends have realized that cheaper rain jackets do not completely prevent water from soaking your clothes, so she thinks it is important to invest in a decent quality jacket. Reliable brands that are popular on the market right now include Columbia, The North Face, and Patagonia clothing companies, which just so happen to be some of the biggest names in the outdoor exploration apparel and equipment market in the United States. Overall, the consensus I'm getting with rain jackets is to get a multi-purpose reliable rain jacket. This is far different from my interviews reception of umbrellas. Umbrellas seem to be successful for students on campus if they are the right size and easily portable, and there does not be such a demand for specific brand names, in turn pricing is lower and price expectations are lower. This is extremely important information moving forward with an Umbrella rental service.

Ultimately there is seems to be fairly low standards for, a solid demand for, and a wide acceptance of umbrellas on campus. This is important for finding a niche in my segments market.

  1. I think you are really asking the right questions that will be necessary to develop your potential business. I am luck this year I have 4 online class so I can avoid the rain more often but as I have commented before, I have a motorcycle so I can carry a umbrella large enough to cover my book bag and body and also be able to fit on my backpack. I liked you view point that certain rain jackets have to be nice brands, but no one ever cares what kind of umbrella they get. I hope you are able to turn this into something if you decide to.

  2. hey joaquin! You are doing your interviews very well, you are investigating each factor so that there are no details that fail in your proposal. I also agree with the people you interviewed, that if a rain jacket is not of a certain quality it is not as effective, however, one does not think about the quality of the umbrella
